Clandestine Recordings: Evolution Executives Reveal Methods Used to Infiltrate Prohibited Nations with Casino Games
In the world of online gaming, Evolution AB, a leading provider of live casino solutions, is currently embroiled in a controversy surrounding allegations that it knowingly allowed its games to be accessible in countries subject to US sanctions or local gambling prohibitions.
The accusations, based on secret video recordings made by private intelligence firm Black Cube between 2021 and 2024, show current and former executives discussing how the company's games reached these prohibited markets through intermediaries and other means. The recordings reportedly include statements about revenues from these countries and even mention high-profile players, such as the Assad family in Syria.
However, Evolution AB strongly denies these accusations. The company asserts that it does not wish for its games to be available in sanctioned markets and that it relies on operators to control player access.
Regarding investigations, New Jersey and Pennsylvania gaming authorities conducted inquiries into the allegations stemming from an anonymous 2021 complaint submitted by law firm Calcagny & Kanefsky. Both investigations concluded by early 2024 with no evidence found that Evolution had materially benefited from distributing games in banned countries, leading to case closures without action.
The defamation lawsuit filed by Evolution against Calcagny & Kanefsky in 2024 is still ongoing. Evolution accuses the law firm of sending a false and defamatory report that allegedly caused a significant drop in Evolutionβs valuation (over $10 billion). The recent affidavit and video evidence submitted by Black Cube are part of this ongoing legal dispute. Despite the new videos, Evolution continues to deny involvement in illegal operations. The lawsuit itself remains active, with Evolution seeking to identify the complainant behind the anonymous report and defend its reputation amid market value impacts.
Evolution claims to deploy "industry-leading solutions" to prevent people in sanctioned countries from accessing games. However, Black Cube agents are said to have accessed Evolution games in Iran and Syria without using VPN or IP concealing technology. Additionally, Evolution US Commercial Director Jeff Millar allegedly discussed selling games in illegal markets like China and Malaysia to an undercover Black Cube agent.
As of August 2025, the UK Gambling Commission has started reviewing Evolution's license. The outcome of this review and the ongoing legal dispute will likely shape Evolution's future in the online gaming industry.
