Fitchburg to Build New Police Station, Save Millions

The Fitchburg city council has approved the construction of a new standalone police building, marking a significant development for the Fitchburg police department. According to the city, the new facility is expected to cost $9 million less than the budgeted amount, potentially leading to a reduction in taxes for taxpayers.

Currently, the Fitchburg police department shares its building with City Hall. The new building will offer the department more space, including a larger evidence area and more interview rooms. This expansion is part of a broader restructuring plan presented by Chief Thomas O'Connor, which includes staffing reassignments, the addition of leadership positions to the night shift, a full-time social work position, and the transfer of their dispatch services.

The proposal for the restructuring of employees at the Fitchburg Police Department is in response to the lack of additional funding and resources. The current police building houses four full-time dispatch positions, but with the transfer of services to Dane County Dispatch, there will be two layoffs. However, this change also presents opportunities for promotions within the department, as all positions in the proposed changes will move internally.

Two new positions will be created for the current dispatchers to apply for, offering them a chance to continue their service in the new facility. City officials expressed excitement about the new facility, stating that it will be a significant improvement from the current one.

The construction bid for the new police building has been approved, and it is expected to break ground as early as fall. The common council will vote on this resolution on September 9. If approved, the new police building will provide the Fitchburg police department with the resources and space they need to serve the community more effectively.
